Belagavi: Angry over not getting their wage since 4 months, hundreds of Pourakarmikas (Civic Workers) attached to City Corporation did not clean the city on Wednesday and held a protest on Deputy Commissioner office premises.About a thousand outsourced Pourakarmikas (Civic Workers) working under contractors said their families were depended on their earning, they were not paid a wage for four months which upset their financial position. It was very difficult to run further the families. Not only the wage, they said were not given breakfast allowance of Rs 600 per month, since 2015. They said they attend the duty at 6 am and work on the field till 2 pm. They have breakfast at the canteen at their own cost thinking that they would be paid later, however, not yet given.

The corporation not taken any action against the contractors for not paying the allowance in time, the workers said and alleged that the officials remained silent as they get a bribe from the contractors.

As the protest was taking the heat, Additional Deputy Commissioner Budeppa and City Corporation Commissioner Shashidhar Kurer who is also in charge DC rushed to the spot and convinced the protesters to take back the stir. Pourakarmikas who earlier had said they would not join back to the work, took back the decision after they were assured of instructing contractors of clear all the dues.
